Getting to Know Universal: TODAY Cafe
Today in Getting to Know Universal we are covering the ins and outs of Universal Studios Florida’s latest counter service restaurant, the TODAY Cafe.
Opened May 16, 2019, with a live broadcast starring weatherman Al Roker from the resort, the cafe specializes in fresh, light options in a casual TV studio setting.
The Experience
Located on the corner of Rodeo Dr and Plaza of the Stars across from Despicable Me, TODAY Cafe takes its design cues from TODAY’s Studio 1A in New York City. If you have seen an episode of TODAY you will know what to expect: white tables, large floor-to-ceiling windows, and accents of cheerful orange. Numerous TVs throughout display TODAY segments or live broadcasts.
TODAY Cafe is counter service dining. The queue starts to the left of the registers and passes a display case of the food options. Once you place your order you will be given a buzzer which will go off once your food is ready. Table top seating of various party sizes are available along with high top seating facing out the windows to the park. Reservations are not accepted or required.
The Food & Drink
TODAY Cafe features fresh, specialty entrees with a focus on healthy selections; do not expect to find burgers and chicken fingers here. Breakfast options include overnight oats with berries (aka fancy oatmeal), breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, and fresh fruit. A large offering of fresh salads, light sandwiches, and desserts are offered for lunch and dinner. All sandwiches come with a side of potato salad or fruit. Portion sizes are reasonable and all food is made fresh.
Also on the menu are several on tap drink selections. Beer options include the amazing Jai Alai IPA by Cigar City, several options of red and white wines, and even cold brew coffee. The cold brew coffee is smooth, low in bitterness, and has a slight fruity flavor; I believe it’s the best coffee available in any Orlando theme park.
The Opinion
TODAY Cafe had big shoes to fill replacing locals favorite Beverly Hills Boulangerie (and its pasta salad). Universal thankfully knocked it out of the park; while the branding is odd the food by Chef Jayson is unique, tasty, and fresh with the seasonal options. While the Cafe will not appease picky eaters the cafe is perfect for guests looking for lighter, trendy fare. I end up at TODAY Cafe at least once a trip just for a cup of cold brew coffee and the side potato salad gets a thumbs up from this potato salad hater.
