Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to Offer Boarding Pass Virtual Queue at Walt Disney World
We are just two days from the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and we now know that the park will indeed be offering a similar boarding pass queue that was offered at Disneyland. (Which was only used for half a day there, so far.)
So, for those who missed it the last time, how will this virtual boarding pass queue work?
Early morning visitors will not have to procure a boarding pass. Instead, they will be able to head directly into the land to experience the shopping, dining, and Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run attraction.
As the day progresses, there may be times when the virtual queue will be used to enter the land. If you are put into the virtual queue, while you’re waiting to enter Batuu, you will be free to enjoy the rest of the park. Guests should check either the My Disney Experience app or check in with the Guest Experience team that can be found within the park for the land’s current status.
To make sure that you’ll be able to join the virtual queue, should you need to, you’ll need to make sure you have the latest version of the My Disney Experience app downloaded on your phone and have your tickets linked. If you’ve enabled push notifications for the app and you have entered the virtual queue, you will be notified when it’s time to enter Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
To see if the land is open, you’ll launch the app and look for the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: Status and Access slide. If the land’s status says open, you’ll be able to proceed directly to the entrance near Grand Avenue. (That’s near Muppet*Vision 3D.)
If the land is full, it will say Access by Boarding Group Only and you will then select to Join a Boarding Group.
If you’ve selected to have push notifications, you’ll be notified in that manner when it’s time to visit the land. If you don’t, you’ll be able to view the boarding group status in the app, or check the various digital status boards throughout the park.
For those who don’t choose to use the My Disney Experience app, if you the land is full and you would like to join a boarding group, you’ll need to visit a Guest Experience Team kiosk.
As a reminder, for those looking to visit Oga’s Cantina, build a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop, or build a droid at Droid Depot, you will need to make a separate reservation. (And I do suspect that if the land is full and you have a reservation, you will be allowed into the land.)

Yes you are required to be in park first. This is by design to prevent people booking slots and no-showing, thus filling up queues, wasting spaces and needlessly extending wait times for everyone else.
Re the question as to when you need to be there, it all depends on demand at any given time. The queue will only be enabled if there are more people who want to get into SWGE than the land can safely accommodate. Once you have a boarding group, you have a couple of hours to return so you can’t select a preferred return time for a later point in the day – its not a reservation system.

I understand how the system will work; however, I’m still looking for opinions on how early in the day the boarding groups will fill up. I imagine the land will be full everyday for weeks/months at first. So the morning crowds will be assigned boarding groups accordingly. I have concerns that the crowds will be so large that anyone who shows up in the afternoon will not be eligible for a boarding group assignment, as the earlier crowds will have already been assigned to groups thru the end of the day. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see this weekend.
Does this mean that if you want to get into Galaxy’s Edge in the evening, you will need to be at HS in the morning to enter the virtual queue?? Will the queue fill up to capacity as well by mid-morning? I know Disneyland didn’t need it, but FL be crazy. Thanks!
