Description And Comments
A whitewater raft ride similar in concept to Disney's Animal Kingdom's Kali River Rapids, Bilge-Rat Barges seats 10 riders at a time on a circular raft down a man-made canyon of gushing rapids, waterfalls, twists, turns and dips. Some of the scenery is visually interesting — there's a huge octopus crammed into a cave two sizes too small, and props along the side of the ride tell the story of Popeye battling Bluto — but you see so much outside the ride that you never really get the sense that you're immersed in the Popeye cartoon world.
What you are immersed in is water — everywhere. You're sprayed from overhead "leaky" pipes; from the side by what looks like air vents; and from every angle by the simple bobbing of the raft in the rapids. Unlike Disney's Kali River Rapids, which occasionally lets lucky riders off with just a misting, it's impossible to experience the Bilge-Rat Barges without getting soaked.
Some children may be frightened by the screams coming from the ride as it passes through Toon Lagoon. These are screams of laughter. If your child is apprehensive about riding, take them to any of the platforms overlooking the ride to see how much fun everyone is having.
- This attraction participates in Universal Express.
Usually opens an hour later than the rest of the park, typically 10 am. Each raft has a covered center console into which you can place cameras, backpacks and shoes. Wear ponchos and store your shoes and socks for the ride. Many people ride the Bilge-Rat Barges and Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls consecutively, right before leaving the park, to avoid sloshing around in wet clothes most of the day.
This chart shows you roughly how long you'll wait for Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges when you visit on a day with a given Islands of Adventure Crowd Level. The blue bars represent the average "peak" wait time (that is, how long the line will at its busiest). The bottom and top black lines represent the range of peak wait times to expect (for you fellow nerds out there: it's the 5th percentile and 95th percentile of peak wait times). Please note that these are estimates, and for a better forecast for your travel dates, see Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges Wait Times.
