Disney Cruise Line in a Jiffy: What is Marvel Day at Sea?

On some sailings each year since 2017, Disney Cruise Line has offered Marvel Day at Sea. For this special event day, you’ll find themed menus, entertainment, activities, and fireworks. It’s a day when it seems as though the whole ship has been taken over by your favorite superheroes! We’ll cover the basics, but one important thing to know: Marvel Day at Sea activities do not cost extra. They are included in your cruise fare.

Marvel is everywhere on Marvel Day at Sea – even in the latte art on your coffee from Cove Cafe

On Marvel Day at Sea, there’s a bit of Marvel everywhere, including several shows that are unique to this day. You’ll find the Warriors of Wakanda show that showcases the Dora Milaje. There’s a Broadway-style show that’s not shown on other sailings or other days. The capstone of the special entertainment is the Marvel Heroes Unite spectacular. This nighttime show on the upper deck has your favorite heroes saving the Universe. Plus, fireworks!

Meet & Greets include Marvel characters who won’t be on the schedule any other day. You’ll also see these characters out and about in the ship’s public areas. You’ll even find regular characters in Marvel-themed outfits if you meet them on Marvel Day at Sea.

It’s all Marvel in the ship’s theaters on Marvel Day at Sea

But many activities are just a Marvel overlay on something you might do on a different day. There are always movies in the ship’s theaters, but on Marvel Day at Sea, they’ll be Marvel films. Some of the trivia will be Marvel-themed. The popular learn-to-draw sessions will have Marvel subjects instead of Disney characters.

On the buffets and at dinner time, you’ll find regular food with themed names or matchups. Sometimes the matchups are a bit of a stretch, like the heroes were an afterthought. For instance, you’ll find Thor’s Mölnir Meatballs and Pasta. You’d think this was an opportunity for some awesome Ikea-style Scandinavian meatballs, but nah. It’s regular Italian-style meatballs and penne with red sauce.

Many guests dress up for Marvel Day at Sea, and some will go all out. But it’s not required. Should you choose to not even go as far as putting on a Marvel-themed T-shirt, you won’t stand out. If you do decide to dress up, be aware of Disney’s costume policy. You’ll also need to make sure any toy weapons will make it past security when you board.

If you’ve read about Pirate Night on Disney Cruise Line, you might be thinking this sounds similar. It is, but with even more special entertainment and theming. And you might be wondering if you’ll be giving up Pirate Night on a cruise with Marvel Day at Sea. The answer to that is: sometimes. On longer itineraries, Disney has held both Pirate Night and Marvel Day at Sea on the same cruise. But on other itineraries, especially 3-day sailings, you’re more likely to be trading away Pirate Night on a Marvel Day at Sea voyage.
