July 2019 Disneyland Crowd Calendar Update

July is here and the Disneyland Crowd Calendar needs an update. A big update. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is open to all guests now and we have collected a month’s worth of wait time data on attractions across both parks. The results are quite shocking.

Record Low Waits

Between June 1 and July 2, Disneyland Park saw an average crowd level of 1.5. Last year during the same period the average crowd level was 6.4. That is nearly a 5 point dip in crowd level on our scale. This is confirmed by our team’s first-hand experience in the parks too. Although Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is very busy, the rest of the park is absolutely dead. You can ride Space Mountain on a Saturday afternoon in summer with less than a 30 minute wait. That hasn’t happened before. Ever.

Wait times are not showing any signs of increasing either. In fact, Disney is scrambling for ways to get people in the parks too with the removal of cast member blockouts and bringing back fan favorites like the Main Street Electrical Parade and the original Soarin’. So the big question is…should you go? The answer is yes, of course! We think these short wait times in the rest of the park are just too good to pass up and we think they will continue all summer.

Crowd Level Updates

Our models predict that these low wait times will continue for the rest of the summer and continue on some days in the fall. If you want low crowd levels there are only a few dates to be concerned about. On August 19, Deluxe Annual Passholders are able get their first look at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge so that will bring in a rush of guests to the park. However, if the flow is similar to what we saw in May and June, those guests will most likely check out the new land and then leave. The rest of park should still see light crowds. Then, on September 3, all levels of passholders have access to the new land and we may see another bump.

This update includes dates through October 31. What happens after that will depend a lot on when Rise of the Resistance opens. Once we know more about that, another update will be in order.

Galaxy’s Edge is Busy

Remember, these low crowd levels appearing as a result of this update are a reflection of the average wait times between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at each park’s key attractions. The attractions at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge are not currently part of the list of key attractions used for the crowd levels. So, a crowd level ‘2’ doesn’t reflect the crowdedness at Galaxy’s Edge. We still expect the new land to be very busy on a daily basis.

  • This update says it includes dates through October 31st, but I’m seeing big changes to crowd projections in April/May 2020–any explanation? I wonder why update projections so far ahead, given the difficulty in forecasting in general, and the Rise of the Resistance factor in particular.

  • Disney probably goofed big time on this one. Price increases is a factor if you are a family of four. Why spend that money with no guarantee of getting into GE for only one ride. For that kind of money, people will wait until it is all opened. Also, I think that maybe some of their new rules have put people off and they won’t go.
From what I see, WDW is not doing that much better for a summer crowd.
