Changes to Current Magic Kingdom Attractions to Make Way for Tron Attraction
It was announced back during the D23 Expo last year that a new attraction will be added to the Magic Kingdom‘s Tomorrowland themed around the film, Tron. While construction has been seen for those who walk along the pathway from Tomorrowland to Storybook Circus (which is where the attraction will be going), there will be a few attractions impacted by the upcoming addition, at least temporarily.
First, the Walt Disney World Railroad will be closed down beginning in December 2018. This makes sense since construction is taking place extremely close to the tracks. During this time, guests will be able to visit the Main Street Train Station to get an up-close look at the railroad and take advantage of one-of-a-kind photo opportunities.
In addition, those with little ones will notice that the Tomorrowland Speedway will be closed for part of 2019, as the attraction’s track is adjusted to make way for the new addition. Don’t worry though! The Tomorrowland Speedway will reopen as the same attraction that Guests enjoy experiencing in the summer of 2019.
No official dates have been announced for either of these closures, so be sure to check our refurbishment page to see if either attraction will be closed during your vacation.
The Tron roller coaster is expected to open in time for Walt Disney World’s 5oth anniversary in 2021. The attraction is based on TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland.
That’s disappointing that they wouldn’t use this opportunity to give Tomorrow Speedway a much needed update/refurb while it’s down.
The rumors & speculation are that the speedway might still get an update/refresh for the 50th, but that it would be wasted (marketing-wise) next year when it’s all about Star Wars. Next year’s closure will be a short one to pour some new pavement, but there could be another closure for a true refresh couple years later.
