SATURDAY SIX at Sea: Sailing with the Princess Cruise Line on the SKY PRINCESS

This week’s SATURDAY SIX heads back to the high seas with a sailing on the SKY PRINCESS. Longtime readers of this fine blog series know that I put off cruising for years. Despite being told over and over again how great cruising was, it never seemed that appealing to me, despite the fact that The Love Boat is one of my all time favorite tv shows (a true guilty pleasure.) Then I went on my first cruise with the Disney Cruise Line and I understood immediately what I had been missing out on. Cruising was awesome! With Port Canaveral being a stone’s throw from Orlando, it was just as easy for me to get on a cruise ship as it was to do a Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando vacation.

Quick personal backstory, my grandmother was a true fan of cruising, and always tried to take me on a cruise with her. My grandmother sailed on all the major cruise lines, and her favorite was Princess. However, Princess Cruise Line didn’t offer any sailings out of Port Canaveral, so when we booked a cruise together we ended up choosing Royal Caribbean. Later this year, Princess will be offering its first-ever sailings out of Port Canaveral as their ship Sky Princess will make that port its new home. I was invited to take a recent sailing on the Sky Princess ahead of its move to Port Canaveral, and I’m here to report back how the sailing went. Imagine my surprise during embarkation day when it became obvious that the Princess Cruise Line is still heavily associated with The Love Boat

I knew this sailing was going to be special. How special? Well, let’s check it out starting with…

# 6 – MedallionClass

Each and every person sailing on a Princess ship is given a Medallion. You can have your Medallion shipped to your home before the cruise, or pick yours up when checking in at the port. The Medallion is a true game changer in the vacation experience, and it works because *everyone* has one. I’ll explain what the Medallion does in a moment, but first lets check out what your Medallion is.

On the Princess Cruise Line app, you can customize your Medallion and order several different accessories. I would guess that the vast majority of guests on the ship – probably 75% or more – just went with the standard Medallion and lanyard that are pictured above. As a theme park fan, you know that I was going to be drawn to their sport band option, which in turn makes the Medallion a defacto MagicBand.

Fun Fact: the Medallion technology was developed by the President of Princess Cruise Line, John Padgett. While Mr. Padgett worked at Disney, he was a creative force not only behind the MagicBand, but also Magical Express and the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

If you choose to have the Medallion mailed to you, it arrives in some very nice packaging. This is similar to the great presentation Walt Disney World had a decade ago when it first began shipping out MagicBands to guests staying at their onsite resorts. This type of package is going to get anyone excited for the upcoming vacation.

The Medallion is about the size of a quarter, and will have your name and sailing imprinted on it.

Because I ordered the sport band options, these also arrived with our Medallions. Each sport band was $10.

The Medallion fit into the sport band easily, and the band can be adjusted to fit a child or adult.

The Medallion is used for EVERYTHING on the ship.

We’ll be going over the many uses of the Medallion throughout this article, but one of the neatest things it does is show you where your friends and family are on the ship. In the Princess app there is a section for “Shipmates” and these are people on the cruise who have shared their location with you via a simple allow/don’t allow button on the app.

The Medallion will allow you to track EXACTLY where your shipmates are on the ship, and the app will give directions on how to get to them. For my example below, I was at the very front of the ship on Deck 16, while my shipmate was at the very back of the ship.

You can also use your Medallion to unlock your cabin door. In my example below, I am using the Medallion to “tap” into the screen that is located directly outside my cabin. This is actually B-Mode. For half of the cruise I didn’t even need to “tap” into the screen, as the screen would detect me walking towards it and automatically unlock the cabin door. This was amazing.

# 5 – The Room

My cabin from Princess was located on the Emerald Deck, which is Deck 8. It was a balcony cabin with an obstructed view. The cabin was located midship, and a stark difference from all the other times I have sailed where my cabins have been located much higher on the various ships, usually on Deck 14 or Deck 15. After this sailing, I can see the allure to a room being located on a lower deck, and I’ll explain the benefits later in the article.

The main space of the room included a queen sized bed, a couch, and a desk.

Princess prides themselves on having the best mattresses in the cruise industry, and while I have only sailed on Disney and Royal Caribbean previously, I can say that the Princess mattress is much better than the ones I have slept on in all my prior cruises. Note the end tables that are on either side of the bed…

…because at night, these end tables had a lighting feature that activated when you stepped next to them. This was fantastic because for anyone who has to get up at night, you can actually see where you are in the room.

The picture below is the exact same shot as the one above without the lighting feature. It was essentially total blackout in the room at night, which is perfect for sleeping, but harder to navigate if you need to get up and go to the bathroom.

Next to the desk was a good sized mini-fridge that kept items COLD.

Right outside the main living area of the room is a large closet space. The door on the right side of the picture below opens to reveal a shelving system and the cabin’s safe.

Don’t worry if you didn’t bring any hangers with you, they can be brought to you by asking your room steward, or by requesting them on the Princess app.

You can also request a Princess bathroom and slippers. The bathrobe was straight up E-Ticket and I was hoping that they sold them in the gift shop, because I definitely would have bought one.

I would say the bathroom area of our cabin was almost exactly like all the bathrooms we have had on sailings with Royal Caribbean. A good use of maximizing space.

The one big difference is that the shower had an actual shower curtain rather than the WWE Elimination Chamber-like pod which seals you in with a door that Royal Caribbean uses.

The obstruction in our “obstructed view” was a lifeboat located directly outside our room.

The lifeboat was listed as holding 315 people and made me wonder how many times you’d be told to “please fill in all the available space” when being loaded in.

I was an invited guest by Princess, but in order to give TouringPlans readers the most objective review possible, we booked a second balcony cabin ourselves (through Touring and Cruises). This was the exact same cabin as mine on Deck 8, except it was located on the Marina Deck (Deck 15) and had no obstructed view. This cabin was located one deck below the pool decks and the World Fresh Marketplace (the large buffet dining area on the Sky Princess) while the cabin on Deck 8 was near all the other dining venues, the various entertainment theaters, and the casino.

View of Amber Cove from a Deck 15 Balcony cabin.

For me personally, there is nothing better than a balcony stateroom on sailings that go to the Caribbean. Not only is it great to see the islands from your balcony, but just sitting there on the balcony while sailing on the ocean is true bliss.

View of Amber Cove from Deck 15 Balcony cabin.

Okay, back to inside the cabin. In all my previous cruises, we spent almost zero time watching TV in the room because of the limited choices.

This was not the case with the  TV on the Sky Princess. NAY NAY. You could watch pretty much anything you wanted. There were live TV options (which allowed us to watch the Super Bowl from inside our room)…

…along with a TON of on-demand TV and movie options. It is almost unfathomable how many options you have, including several animated and MCU films from Disney. As I mentioned we sailed during the week of the Super Bowl, so there was an entire selection of football movies to watch including Remember the Titans, Rudy, and Kevin Costner’s Draft Day (another guilty pleasure of mine and, yes, I did watch it again on the cruise.)

I could do an entire article just on the many things you can do and watch via the in-room TV. It was incredible.

For those who enjoy towel animals on their sailings, there were several nights during our sailing where we came back to find one lying on our bed.

Our sailing not only took place during the weekend of the Super Bowl, but we were also on the ship during Valentine’s Day.

# 4 – The Ship

Let’s take a look at some of the offerings for guests on the Sky Princess, including the very first area you will see when boarding the ship, The Piazza.

The Piazza area is pretty much the hub of the Sky Princess and includes Decks 5, 6, and 7. The area is stunning in person, with some gorgeous lighting features.

Looking down at The Piazza from Deck 7.

My pictures of The Piazza were taken during the early morning, because once the day started this area became hopping with people and stayed that way all night long. It was The Place To Be, and a large majority of entertainment, shopping, and dining options on the Sky Princess is either located directly at The Piazza or directly off of it. During the evening there would be live music, and in general it was a great place to hang out.

For those who enjoy pools while on a cruise, there were multiple large pools on Deck 16 along with an adults-only pool on Deck 17.

Adult’s Only Pool.

We were drawn to the smaller Wake View pool at the aft of the ship on Deck 16. Right next to this pool was a bar and we found ourselves near this area on pretty much every sea day.

Each night of the cruise there was a “Movie Under the Stars” playing on the large screen facing the pool deck.

We saw the movies Elvis and Valentine’s Day during the course of our sailing. Another night we watched half of Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid.

Movie under the stars seating.
Blankets available for Movie Under the Stars viewing.

For those that like hot tubs there were several to be found.

One thing that I liked on Deck 16 was the SeaWalk located on both sides of the ship. This is a glass walkway that has you looking down over the sea or at areas on the ship that are 10 decks below.

The Sky Princess has a large casino filled with table games and a whole bunch of electronic slots and poker machines. I don’t spend much time in the casinos on my cruises, but will usually go down one night to play a little roulette. When cashing out I also discovered that you could purchase scratch tickets in the casino. This is probably well known to any gamblers out there, but it was the first time I ever noticed them, and of course I bought the scratch ticket where you could win a free cruise as one of the prizes.

Massages at home are good, but massages while at sea are next level.

Lotus spa.

I’ve had massages on both Disney and Royal Caribbean sailings, but my massage on the Sky Princess was the first one where the masseuse didn’t try to sell me products afterwards. Appreciated that.

Massage table.

Princess Cruise Line is more adult focused than Royal Caribbean, but the Sky Princess does have kid clubs and an arcade.

Apparently I’m one of the few people who doesn’t buy fine art while on a cruise ship because it seems no matter what sailing I’m on – no matter what cruise line – there is an art gallery along with various art auctions promoted throughout the sailing.

On one of the days of our sailing the art gallery was loaded up with Disney paintings from the Thomas Kinkade Studio. Again, I don’t buy fine art, BUT IF I DID, this is what I would buy. This whole series is wonderful.

One thing I loved about our sailing with Princess is that each night our room steward would deliver the Princess Patter. This was a sheet of paper that listed out all the various entertainment that would be taking place on the ship during the next day. You could also use your Princess App for this feature and look for the ship schedule.

The app will show you everything that is taking place on the ship. Our interest was piqued by a Fruit & Vegetable Carving demonstration that would occur at The Piazza.

Four members of the Princess culinary team created works of art in front of our eyes. While they were carving, the host of the event was describing various aspects of what goes into the fruit carvings guests see on the ship.

One of the chefs doing the fruit and vegetable carving had a knack for creating well known characters in his creations, such as this one featuring an Angry Bird.

It was pretty amazing to see these creations come to life in front of our eyes.

More shocking is how much detail goes into these carvings, and how fast the chef/artists work. We were told afterwards that all the carvings we saw being made would later be featured in the World Fresh Marketplace.

Lo and behold, the carvings were later at the World Fresh Marketplace, including the dragon featured in the sushi area.

# 3 – The Shows

My personal favorite part of any entertainment onboard a cruise ship are the shows, and my mind was blown when discovering that the Sky Princess was home to a Jim Henson Muppets show.

No pictures or video were allowed during the performance, but the concept of this 30 minute show is that it faithfully recreates skits that Jim Henson himself had done with his Muppets back in the 1960s. I had no idea this show existed and was blown away. I’m a gigantic fan of Jim Henson’s work from the late 1970s on, and this was a part of his career I never knew about.

Jim Henson’s Inspired Silliness.

Between the live performance skits there were also some video vignettes. Several of these videos featured a Muppet version of Jim Henson, and a show stopping reveal (at least to me) came when the camera pulled back to reveal that it was Brian Henson – Jim Henson’s son – who was performing the Jim Henson Muppet. For Jim Henson fans, this is a show worth going out of your way to see and was one of my favorite things that I’ve seen on any cruise.

The main theater on the Sky Princess is the Princess Theater located on decks 5 and 6. This venue holds the larger productions.

One of the signature shows of the Sky Princess is Rock Opera, which somehow combines classic rock with opera. This was next level bonkers in the best way possible.

A huge hit during our sailing was The Tribute to Sir Elton John.

There was so much going on during the week that I didn’t even get a chance to experience half of what I wanted to, but that’s one of the best parts about a cruise vacation, you are almost overwhelmed with amazing options throughout the day.

# 2 – The Food

One thing I need to mention is that Princess offers three packages for guests when booking their cruise. Princess Standard is included with your cruise fare. Princess Plus is an additional charge that includes wi-fi, a drink package, your gratuities and more. Princess Premier includes everything in the Princess Plus and a whole bunch more. Here is a break down of what is included with each package:

I was given the Princess Premier package, however the occupants in the other cabin we booked sailed under the Princess Standard package. As of fan of The Key on Royal Caribbean, I was blown away by the offerings in the Premier Package and is something I would buy it on any cruise line if they offered it. One of the benefits of the Princess Premier is a photo package that includes unlimited digital prints and 3 prints. For my sailing, the Sky Princess had more photo ops and photographers than any other cruise I had ever been on. THAT SAID, after returning from the cruise, I think you can also have an amazing cruise by sailing with the Princess Standard.

Okay, let’s get on to the food. Another thing that Princess prides itself on – besides having  the best mattresses in the cruise industry – is that they also offer The Best Pizza at Sea. When hearing a claim like that, my first thought was “I’ll be the judge of that.” I can report back that, yes, Princess DOES have the best pizza at sea (at least compared to Disney and Royal Caribbean.) The first place we tried pizza at was Alfredo’s Pizzeria located in The Piazza.

Alfredo’s Pizzeria was included in my Princess Premier package, but any guest can order a pizza for $8.50. The pizzas are made to order and reminded me of Red Oven Pizza Bakery in Universal Citywalk (which is high praise in this pizza aficionado’s book.)

Chef stretching out the dough.
Chef applying the topings.
Pepperoni and Bianco el Nero (imported burrata, black summer truffle and mozzarella.)

On Deck 16 there was grab and go pizza called Slice. Each day of the sailing Slice offered cheese, pepperoni, and vegetarian slices along with a special of the day. These slices were complimentary to all guests and were incredible.

Princess Pizza (tomato sauce, mozzarella, Italian sausage and chili flakes.)

Other “slices of the day” included: Nizzarda (tuna, chili flakes, red onion, extra-virgin olive oil),  Prosciutto e Funghi (ham, mushrooms, black olives and oregano), Meat Feast  (Ialian sausage, ground beef, black olives, basil), Tarantina (mussels, bay shrimp, basil, parsley, extra virgin olive oil) and Hawaiian.

Hawaiian, because weirdoes perfectly sane people cruise too.

Tears came straight to me eyes seeing a themed pizza box. Princess Cruise Line gets me, they truly get me.

Also on Deck 16 was another complimentary venue called The Salty Dog that offered hamburgers, veggie burgers, tacos, chicken and pulled pork sandwiches. There was a large toppings bar located nearby to add to your items.

Veggie Burger from The Salty Dog.

When we sail with Royal Caribbean, we often find ourselves at their buffet area called The Windjammer. Sky Princess had a similar large buffet space on Deck 16 called World Fresh Marketplace that was open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

There is a ton of seating indoors at World Fresh Marketplace and even more seating right outside.

Just a sampling of some of the seating within World Fresh Marketplace

Pretty much every food you can think of was available at the buffet, and there were plenty of options daily for vegans and vegetarians.

While there were standard items every single night of the sailing, at least half of the menu rotated daily featuring a different theme. One day was British themed and there were options such as fish and chips, bangers, and English pea soup. Another day was “Picnic BBQ” and had items such as fried chicken, ribs, and corn on the cob. On days we visited islands, dishes included food from that particular area including Puerto Rican Picadillo.

World Fresh Marketplace. Fish and chips.
World Fresh Marketplace. Fried Chicken.
World Fresh Marketplace. Chicken Shawarma.

Many of you are probably like my grandmother and prefer to have waiter service in the main dining room. Sky Princess has three dining rooms and our experience at these was top notch as well. Impeccable service and the food was excellent. For larger groups, it can be much easier to get an assigned table you will be at each and every meal in a main dining room than trying to find seating at World Fresh Marketplace.

Pepper for my Classic Caesar Salad? Don’t mind if I do.
Oven Baked Vegetable Tart.
Beef Wellington with Truffle Madeira demi-glace.

Highlight of every dinner in the main dining room is getting crème brûlée for dessert.

Sky Princess also features three upcharge specialty dining restaurants including Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria, Crown Grill, and The Catch by Rudi. The Princess Premium package comes with two specialty dinners, so we first went to Crown Grill.

Crown Grill might have been our favorite overall experience food wise on the cruise. The service was terrific and we were blown away by the meal.

Lobster Tail at Crown Grill.
Crown Grill Salt Selection – Hawaiian Black Salt, Smoked Applewood Salt, and Himalayan Mountain Pink Salt.
Crown Grill New York Strip,11oz. with Salt Selection.

Crown Grill even found a way to improve to improve crème brûlée by adding a piece of cheesecake on top of it.

My reaction?

Our other specialty dining selection was The Catch by Rudi. For theme park fans Chef Rudi Sodamin is the cruise line equivalent to Universal’s chef Steven Jayson. A true innovator in their field. As a person who is not a fan of seafood, I am generally not drawn to a seafood restaurant, but I was intrigued by the reviews I had heard that complimented the artistic presentation of the dishes.

The Catch did not disappoint when it came to artistic flair. I knew we were in for a special meal when the water was delivered via a glass fish.

Check out this serving dish for the Fisherman’s Stew. This level of creativity is something I would expect to see a theme park restaurant (and an expensive one at that.) The overall meal experience reminded me of Wonderland on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas and that’s as high a compliment as I can give a sit down restaurant. Blown away.

Now that’s a dessert fork!

Traditional room service on a cruise has you ordering food and waiting to have it brought to your cabin. Because of the Medallion technology, “room service” on the Sky Princess could be ordered from anywhere onboard the ship via the Order Now option on the Princess App. For Princess Premier package holders Order Now was included, and was $5 for other guests. There were many complimentary food items in the order now menu, but also others that had a cost. One thing I wanted to try was the ice cream.

So I ordered some of the Purple Cookie Mon-Star & Me ice cream while I chilled out on Deck 16.

About 20 minutes later, the ice cream arrived.

Another day I used Order Now to have pepperoni pizza delivered, and I’m relatively confident in saying that the pizza came directly from Alfredo’s Pizzeria.

For food orders across the ship, and amenities delivered straight to our cabin, Order Now worked flawlessly. For drink orders, not so much. I would say we placed five orders for various alcoholic drinks during our sailing and only one actually arrived. The good news is that there are bars all across the ship and – in my experience – the lines at the bars aren’t nearly as long as ones I’ve seen on other cruiselines.

Dirty Banana.

Something I look forward to on every cruise is the availability of soft serve ice cream. Deck 16 has Swirls, which offers, vanilla, chocolate, and swirl options along with various types of sprinkles to put on top.

One of the bigger surprises food wise was how much we enjoyed the complimentary International Café located on Deck 5 as part of The Piazza. This location was open 24 hours a day and had wonderful options served throughout the day. From monkey bread and cinnamon rolls in the morning to various sandwiches, cheeseburger pie and “muffin pizza” at night, International Café was always on point.

If you’re like me, you either gain 20 pounds in one week on the cruise, or you spend some time in the Sky Princess gym which is bigger than any Planet Fitness I’ve been in. Like the International Café, the fitness center is open 24 hours. There are tons of treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, free weights, nautilus machines, and several rooms for stretching and other gym related activities.

# 1 – Ports of call

For me, the biggest draw of any cruise is the ports of call that it is sailing to. The Princess Cruise Line has ships all across the globe visiting every locale you can think of, including Hawaii, the Panama Canal, Alaska and even Antarctica. One of the best parts about sailing out of Florida is our easy access to so many amazing islands in the Caribbean. All of my cruises over the years have been in the Caribbean waters. I’ve heard nothing but amazing stories from people who have gone to Alaska, the Mediterranean, and South America, but I am in love with the Caribbean. I’m originally from New Hampshire, so I didn’t grow up being a “beach guy.” However, the beaches on the Caribbean Islands I’ve been to over the years (including St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Antigua among others) make our beaches in Florida seem like the beaches in New Hampshire. If I lived on any of these Caribbean islands I would immediately become a “beach guy.” For this sailing on the Sky Princess we made four stops to places that I had never been to before, including Princess Cays, the private island of Princess Cruise Line.

Good news for anyone who has a drink package onboard the ship, it works on the island.

There are various excursions you can take while on Princess Cays, or just enjoy the beach area. We rented one of the clamshell loungers, but there are plenty of available loungers at no charge.

The clamshell loungers are pretty much exactly what you get with premium seating at Universal’s Volcano Bay, just without the waiter service. We spent our day at Princess Cays walking the island, checking out the various items for sale at the Princess store and local vendors (remember to bring cash for those items) while going in and out of the water.

Princess Cays Clamshell loungers.

The food options at Princess Cays were all included, and reminded me very much of the options we had on Disney’s Castaway Cay. A large selection of fresh fruit…

…along with various grilled meat options including chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages and ribs.

Princess Cays. WE GOT THE MEAT.

*San Juan, Puerto Rico

In Puerto Rico, we booked an excursion to the El Yunque Rainforest. This was a pretty incredible experience.

The walk through the rainforest was wild, and our tour guide was pointing out all the local vegetation. I don’t think my pictures do it justice, but the plants below had a shimmering effect like you would see in Pandora: The World of Avatar.

The rainforest trip included jumping of rock cliffs and going down rock slides. Definitely can recommend the excursion for those who like adventure.

*Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos

Our second stop was Grand Turk, and for this island we did an excursion that included snorkeling over a reef that including a humongous drop. This was bananas and straight out of Finding Nemo. I’ve snorkeled in many waters, but I’ve never snorkeled over a big drop and it was breathtaking to behold. If you like to snorkel, you need to do this excursion.

I liked to pick up local bottles of beer from the islands that we visit.

After we snorkeled for a while, our boat started to make its way out to another island to have an encounter with stingrays. While on the way over, the boat stopped so that one of the crew could dive for conch shells. On the island they would make conch ceviche for the guests on the boat.

I’ve done stingray encounters in Grand Cayman, which was nuts, so the stingray encounter during our Grand Turks excursion was nothing to be nervous about as these amazing creatures swam by you.

*Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

Our last island stop was Amber Cove and this was beyond great. You could spend an entire day just in the controlled Amber Cove port. There are so many great shops and areas to visit in this port area that I could easily see us spending a day there on a future cruise.

I never put two and two together before the cruise, but Amber Cove is where part of the movie Jurassic Park was filmed.

Amber Cove.
Amber Cove.

There is a huge resort-style area located in controlled port which includes a gigantic pool with a walk up bar. Of course I went into the pool for an E-Ticket souvenir cup like this.

We actually left the controlled port area for our excursion, as we traveled out to Damajagua Falls. Here we walked up a mountain to do a zip line and waterfall experience and it was FIVE STARS. The wi-fi onboard the Sky Princess works really well, and the night before Amber Cove I was watching YouTube videos of people experiencing the Falls and it looked MISERABLE. Maybe we were just lucky because of the time of year, or just because we weren’t in a group of several hundred people, but this was one of the best excursions we have had on any island. There were some rock cliff jumps in Puerto Rico that I said NAY NAY too and opted for a smaller jump. Well, all the jumps at Damajagua Falls were higher than the “high” jump at Puerto Rico and I had to do them because I’m certainly not going to be the one guy climbing down a ladder while everyone else jumps.

The water couldn’t have been more refreshing after the hike up the mountain. For us, this excursion was top notch.

One thing that Princess did at each island was have ice water and cold towels available for people walking back to the ship. There was also an area where you could sit down and relax. This was great because on a lot of our excursions it can be an exhausting day after doing these activities in the Caribbean heat.

Cold towels.

One thing we also discovered at Amber Cove is what happens when you lose your Medallion. After doing the excursion to Damajagua Falls, one of my shipmates (no names mentioned) realized that her Medallion sport band was no longer on her wrist. She realized this while we were at the security checkpoint to get back into the port. For 5-10 seconds, this might have been the most stressful moment of our lives. Thankfully I had packed our drivers licenses in our backpack and were able to get past security and back onto the ship with that. At guest services, they printed up a new Medallion within minutes and it still  had the personalized engravings. That was a nice surprise.

Honorable Mention: Stanley the Bear

There are a lot of correlations between the Princess Cruise Line and theme parks, and one thing that may be recognizable a meet and greet character in the form of Stanley the bear.

Stanley also has a full line of merchandise, including plush in a variety of outfits and you better believe I bought the Stanley in his cruise uniform.

Double Secret Honorable Mention: Laundromat

One thing that we weren’t allowed to do on Royal Caribbean was self laundry service. Generally speaking, we are over packers when it comes to sailing out of Florida because we are just driving to the ports and can take as much luggage as we want. I had read that Princess ships had self laundry service, and was pleasantly surprised to find out there is a laundry room on pretty much every floor that has guest cabins. Because we knew we could wash clothes, it meant we could pack a little less items and re-use them after washing.

Laundromat on Deck 8.

We brought our own detergent, but soap, bleach, and softener was available to purchase.

Laundromat.
Washer and Dryer.

The laundromat machines used special coins to operate that you could purchase in each laundromat, or by going to guest services.

Triple Threat Honorable Mention: THE LOVE BOAT

I have to close out by mentioning once again, I am a huge fan of The Love Boat TV show and I had absolutely no idea that in 2024 the Princess Cruise Line still identified itself with that show. I had a small clue when going through the port on embarkation day and seeing signage in The Love Boat font, but when the Sky Princess left the port it played The Love Boat theme on its air horn!

I mentioned earlier that there was a metric ton of TV shows and movies to watch on-demand in your cabin. One of those shows featured is THE LOVE BOAT!

There are episodes of The Love Boat available from NINE DIFFERENT SEASONS.

After finishing one episode, my mind was blown again as there was a special ad by The Love Boat’s own Capt. Stubing made exclusively for Princess Cruise Line. The smile on my face was a mile wide at this point and the only thing that can top this is if I somehow find out there is a cruise line that is built completely around GI Joe and the Transformers.

  • I was privileged to be a guest on board the shakedown cruise of Sky from Trieste Italy to Pireaus
( Athens). It was a remarkable trip. I am not a fan of “mega” ships but Sky always felt like a smaller capacity vessel in all the good ways. My photos of Sky arriving from the shipyard at the Trieste terminal are very special as was our meeting some of the Fincantieri staff who built her.

  • Derek,
You’ve written some great Sat 6, but this is one of the best. I’ve never sailed Princess before, but have one booked late this year. I had no idea all that was in store for me and I’m so exciting. I may just have to book another Princess cruise aboard this new ship!

  • Great to see you enjoyed your cruise. Princess was our first cruise line and is the line we’ve sailed on most. Love seeing how far the Medallion tech has come and what a game changer it is. Every time we sail on another line, it doesn’t take long before I’m thinking of how much I miss having a Medallion. We were on the very first test cruise for Medallion and basically nothing worked… LOL. It has come a long way since then.
