Description And Comments

The monorail is a futuristic transportation ride that affords the only practical opportunity for escaping the park during the crowded lunch period and early afternoon. Boarding at the Tomorrowland monorail station, you can commute to the Downtown Disney complex, where it's possible to have a nice lunch without fighting the crowds. For those not interested in lunch, the monorail provides a tranquil trip with a nice view of Downtown Disney, Disney California Adventure theme park, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland.

The current "Mark VII" monorails, introduced in 2008, have a beautiful, sleek look, but can get quite hot inside (no air conditioning!).

Touring Tips

We recommend using the monorail to commute to Downtown Disney for a quiet, relaxing lunch away from the crowds and the heat. If you only want to experience the ride, go whenever you wish; the wait to board is usually 15 to 25 minutes except in the 2 hours before closing.

Note that during busier times of the year, if you want to take a round-trip ride, you may be required to disembark and re-queue to return to your destination (they will announce this before you get on).

Unless only one monorail is running or it's raining (the monorails perform less well in the rain), loading is surprisingly quick, with monorails departing every 5 minutes. Ask the cast member at the entrance how many monorails are running if you want to get a better estimate of how long you'll wait.

The monorail may suspend services from one hour before the Disneyland Park's evening fireworks until 45 minutes afterwards, and ceases to bring guests into the park 30 minutes before closing.

Note that the 15-minute duration listed here assumes you take a "round trip" journey from the Tomorrowland Monorail Station. The actual ride time (during which the train is moving) is about 3 minutes from Tomorrowland to Downtown Disney and 5 minutes from Downtown Disney to Tomorrowland

Monorail service may be suspended for hours at a time during days with extreme heat. We're talking high 90s. It may seem frustrating, but trust us, Disney is doing you a favor.

Disneyland Monorail Wait Times

This chart shows you roughly how long you'll wait for Disneyland Monorail when you visit on a day with a given Disneyland Park Crowd Level. The blue bars represent the average "peak" wait time (that is, how long the line will be at its busiest). The bottom and top black lines represent the range of peak wait times to expect (for you fellow nerds out there: it's the 5th percentile and 95th percentile of peak wait times). Please note that these are estimates, and for a better forecast for your travel dates, see Disneyland Monorail Wait Times.
