Setting and Atmosphere

In 2009, Epcot did something that many adults had been asking for...they opened a fully-themed, full service bar. With the amount of alcohol served at Epcot, it seems hard to believe that it had only one full service bar for a very long time. Luckily for all of us, that has changed.

La Cava del Tequila (The Cellar of Tequila), is one of the best adult spaces you will find on Walt Disney World property. Tucked away inside the pyramid that makes up the Mexico pavilion, La Cava (as it is known to its regulars) is an intimate room with an amazing staff, several of which are dedicated tequila experts. It also serves some wonderful cocktails.

To better explain the space, let’s start at the beginning...the very beginning. Tequila is actually the name of a pre-Hispanic town near Guadalajara, Mexico. As one would assume, it is the birthplace of the liquor bearing its name, which was first produced in the early 17th century. Tequila is extracted from the heart of the large agave plant, and many aficionados will tell you that any tequila worth its salt (get it? Tequila...salt...never mind) will be 100% agave. If you care to learn all the intricacies of tequila, the staff at La Cava is more than happy to tell you all about it.

Take a look around La Cava while you’re listening to stories of the magic of tequila. The exposed wood beams, soft lighting, and textured walls give the room a dark, intimate feel, almost as if you could expect to see tequila maturing in casks in the corner. And there really are casks in the corner! To further La Cava’s point, along one wall runs a mural depicting the process of making tequila.

House Specialties

Naturally, tequila is the star at La Cava del Tequila with more than 100 varieties of the agave juice in all styles and prices. Their most popular drinks are their delicious margaritas, which come in many interesting flavors. Usually available are Avocado, Blood Orange, Wild Passion Fruit, Pineapple, Jalapeño, Pomegranate, and Cucumber margaritas, as well as some classic varieties.

Avocado is the most popular, and we like the Cucumber margarita to cool off on hot summer days. Several tequila flights are also available if you are in a tasting mood. These typically include three shot-sized glasses, each with a different style or brand of tequila. If beer is your thing, then you may be at the wrong place. Okay, they do have a few Mexican beers here such as Sol, Bohemia, and Tecate, although it seems wrong to order anything that does not contain tequila (and adding tequila to your beer seems like a monumentally bad idea).

Other Recommendations

If you're hungry, La Cava serves a few appetizers that are surprisingly good for a tequila cellar. Fresh queso blanco, salsa, and guacamole are all fantastic and the shrimp cocktail with spicy tomato sauce is great if you're looking for something more filling. La Cava offers tequila tasting seminars a few times per year, usually during Epcot's fall Food and Wine Festival. These are a great way to sample very good spirits and learn more about tequila production.
