MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack

MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack

An Attraction in Universal Studios Florida

Last updated: December 18, 2024

At a Glance

MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack brings together Will Smith and Rip Torn (as Agent J and MIB director Zed) for an interactive sequel to the hit sci-fi franchise. You'll notice the ride's building pays homage to the architecture from 1964 World's Fair, including the observation towers from the New York State Pavilion that featured in 1997 film's finale. That theme is carried over to the attraction's pre-show, which perfectly parodies the style of Disney's Carousel of Progress before taking a surprise turn. The storyline has you recruited as a Men in Black (MIB) trainee. After an introduction warning that aliens “live among us” and articulating MIB’s mission to round them up, Zed expounds on the finer points of alien spotting and familiarizes you with your training vehicle and your weapon, an alien “zapper.”

You then load up in a 6-passenger spinning ride vehicle, and are dispatched into an innocuous "training room" shooting gallery full of plywood targets shaped like aliens. Your training is cut short when it is revealed that a real alien spaceship has landed in New York and you must save the city. The meat of the ride consists of careening around Manhattan in your MIB vehicle and shooting aliens. There are more targets than anyone could possibly shoot and they're presented at a fast pace. Each ride vehicle is paired with another ride vehicle running alongside on a parallel track, and both vehicles are competing to see who can shoot the most aliens. At a certain point during the ride you'll be able to shoot at the “fusion exhaust port” of the opposing ride vehicle, causing them to spin momentarily. This disorients the other riders and causes them to lose precious time splatting the aliens. Of course, the other riders (and some of the aliens!) can shoot at you, too.

MEN IN BLACK is interactive in that your marksmanship and ability to blast yourself out of some tricky situations will determine how the story ends. You’re awarded both a personal score (as at the Magic Kingdom’s Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin) and a score for your car. There are about three dozen possible outcomes and literally thousands of different ride experiences determined by your pluck, performance, and, in the final challenge, your intestinal fortitude. Regardless of your score, all recruits are deemed not ready to join MIB, and everyone's memories of the game are "wiped" at the end of the ride.

In keeping with the movie's habit of referring to aliens as "bugs," the post-ride gift shop sells candy with actual bugs stuck inside. Unless you really want to know what kind of crunch a grub worm provides, we suggest throwing a wad of $1 bills just outside the gift shop's doors to distract small children from the food displays. It's cheaper and better for your stomach.

Each alien figure has sensors that activate special effects and respond to your zapper. Aim for the eyes and keep shooting, since you can score repeatedly on the same target. Your gun has auto-fire and unlimited ammo, so just keep the trigger depressed the whole ride; you'll even get a small number of points for missed shots. Targets above you score the most points: look for aliens behind second-story windows. At the ride's climax, listen carefully for Zed to instruct you to “push the red button,” and do so when he says the “b” in “button” to score a bonus 100,000 points. If you're good enough, you can “max out” with 999,999 points – trust us, it can be done!

Avoid a long wait and ride during the first two hours the park is open, or try the single-rider line if you don’t mind splitting your group. However, the singles and Express queues skip the preshow, which is worth seeing at least once. You can re-ride by following the signs for the child swap at the top of the exit stairs.

If it isn't too busy, ask the attendant out front if you can have a free "Immigration Tour." If you're lucky, they'll take you into the large preshow room below the queue, where you can take selfies sitting at an agent's desk and get a close-up look at the animatronic alien twins.
